Hello! We look forward to camp and meeting all of the Taiwanese students in July.
Emily Bai, TA
University of Texas at Austin ’21 | Nutrition
Hometown: Taichung, Taiwan
Hiii! My name is Emily Bai :) Born and raised in Taichung, Taiwan, and I will become a sophomore at University in Texas at Austin this fall! I’m currently a nutrition major (if I don’t switch anymore hehe) on a pre-med track, having a passion to do healthcare related work afterwards. I also love to make new friend, create new friendships everywhere! I felt like God has called me back to Taiwan for this journey, which is both a extreme challenge to my faith as well as an adventure! Being medical related and outreaching while making new friends, MSCE is basically an opportunity that has the best of both worlds and I can’t wait to meet y’all!
What superpower do you want and why? If I could have a superpower, I would want the ability to eat anything without getting fat! Even though this doesn’t sound like an actual superpower, but it’s something that I really wish I’d be able to do since I love to try a lot of different food and sweets and I’m always hungry! hehe
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? A hobby that I want to pick up but never did is learn how to do boxing! I wanted to learn a sport that I can practice by myself, and seeing how focused other people do boxing with the sack attracted me. Unfortunately, I only took the first “lesson” from one of my friends once and then we never continued after that.
Christy Cao, TA
University of Texas at Austin ’21 | Biology
Hometown: Houston, TX
Hi everyone! My name is Christy and I currently attend the University of Texas at Austin where I am majoring in Biology. Some of my aspirations include going to medical school, going sky diving, and providing for my family. In my free time, I love to practice calligraphy, to relax, to play with my dog, and to go hiking. God has blessed me with amazing family and friends, and I love love love spending time with them and creating new memories. I also really enjoy meeting new people and making new friends, so I am excited to get to meet everyone and to get to know you all!!
What superpower do you want and why? If I could have any superpower, it would be the power to heal. Just as God has healed all of us in our own personal ways, I would want to be able to provide any type of healing to those around me as well!
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? I wish I could dance! I love listening to music, and wish I could move along with the music as well at times. Also, I just love seeing how talented others are when they perform those sick dance moves. I never tried learning because I am shy since I can’t dance (haha), but I definitely hope to get out of my comfort zone to learn in the future.
Justin Chan, TA
California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo ’20 | Biological Sciences
Hometown: Milpitas, California
Hi friends! My name is Justin, and I am a sophomore at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo studying Biological Sciences. I usually spend my free time playing basketball at the gym, testing out a new recipe in the kitchen (I love making fresh boba milk tea), or having deep conversations with friends. I love Jesus, love meeting new people, and am looking very forward to meeting you!
What superpower do you want and why? I would love to have super speed. With super speed comes three things: (1) I could be so much more productive (almost like time traveling), 2) I can move the molecules in my body so fast that people could punch right through me, and lastly (most importantly) 3) rotating my arms super duper fast would also give me an ability to fly.
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? I would love to learn how to sing. I love singing and worshiping God and would love to actually take vocal lessons.
Ariana Gruber, TA
Biola University ’16 | Communication Sciences and Disorders/Speech-Language Pathology
Hometown: Whittier, CA
Hello! My name is Ariana! I am very excited to be returning to MSCE for the third time. I have spent the last year working as a nanny for a family of two adorable kids as well as serving as a staff member in my church’s college ministry. I oversee the Freshmen college students and I love their enthusiasm, desire to learn, and spontaneity. God has taught me so much about His love and plans for me through my job and position as college staff. I love spending time with my family at home and going out to eat with friends and church family! I will always say yes to getting boba, frozen yogurt, or really any chance to spend time with friends sharing some yummy food! I really enjoy playing board games and learning new games. I also love the outdoors and hiking, or even just napping on the grass in the sun. I love learning new things. And I love seeing others grow, learn, laugh, and enjoy life! I really look forward to returning to Taiwan this summer to make new friends, learn more about Taiwan, and share a lot of laughs and memories. Every time I go, it gets harder to leave!
What superpower do you want and why? I often lose things or leave things behind, so if I could have any superpower it would be the ability to make something come to me, no matter where it is, even if I have no idea where it is. I would just need to think of it, and it would return to me! No more lost water bottles or cell phone!
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? I used to play the piano until I got to college, so I would love to pick up that hobby again. I also always wanted to take up photography. I love the beauty that people are able to capture in photos and I think it would be really cool to do photography.
Zoe Hsiao, TA
University of California, Berkeley ’21 | Biology
Hometown: Fremont, CA
Hi everyone! My name is Zoe Hsiao and I just finished my first year at UC Berkeley. I was born in Taiwan, moved to the United States when I was 2 years old, and have been in the Bay Area ever since. At my home church in Fremont, I played violin and sang in the choir and now I just sing at the church I go to in Berkeley. Aside from studying, I spend my time hanging out with friends, going to fellowship events, trying new foods, and recently I’ve gotten into journaling! I love the weather, food, and people of Taiwan so I am ecstatic for this opportunity to meet you all and grow together in Christ in such a beautiful place.
What superpower do you want and why? If I could have any superpower I’d want the ability to freeze time because after freshman year I’ve realized how precious time is! With extra time I could get so much done like catch up on studying (or sleep ☺).
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? A hobby I’ve always wanted to pick up but never did is track and field. In high school, hurdling and pole vaulting seemed so cool but I never had the time to try it out unfortunately.
Christine Hsu, TA
University of North Carolina Chapel Hill ’21 | Epidemiology University of the Pacific ’15 | Pharm D
Hometown: San Jose, CA
Hi everyone! My name is Christine and I am a student at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. I am studying public health, and my research interests include medication usage, older adults (geriatrics), chronic diseases, and global health. My favorite things to do include spending time with friends and family, reading in a coffeeshop, and admiring God’s creations in the great outdoors! After I graduate, I hope to teach in a university, because I enjoy interacting with students and answering interesting research questions.
What superpower do you want and why? If I had a superpower, I would be able to instantly know how to cook foods from different cultures. It normally takes a lot of time and practice to make a dish from a different culture taste perfect, but my superpower would allow me to cook like experienced grandmother! Many of my friends are from other countries, and they often miss the food from their home countries. It would be fun to surprise them with a meal that reminds them of home, and enjoy it together ^_^
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? I would want to pick up the hobby of birdwatching, so I can identify more bird species and recognize their songs. I really like animals (see if you can find the animal in my picture~!), and I especially like how birds are so diverse, with all kinds of colors, shapes, and sizes!
University of California, Irvine ’20 | Education
Hometown: Union City, CA
Hello, my name is Shih Yuan Huang but everyone just calls me Lily. I was born on December 2, 1998 in Taiwan. I lived in Taiwan for six years of my life and moved to America so afterwards. I moved to Kentucky and stayed there for around six years and moved to Northern California. I finished high school in Northern California and now currently attending UCI for my education major. I have been a Christian since I was six and goes every week to Sunday meetings. I am currently looking forward to become a teacher after I finish college and getting my masters.
What superpower do you want and why? I would want the superpower to know what other people are feeling so I can make them happy if they are sad. Or I know whenever they are mad so I don’t have to ask them consistently if they are upset.
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? I always wanted to pick up the hobby of knitting because a lot of people told me that it’s a useful skill to have if you have to be in a spot for a long time. It’s also a useful life skill when you want to make some meaningful gift for someone. But I never took the time to sit down and knit, maybe some day when I have more time on my hands.
Luke Lin, TA
University of California, San Diego ’18 | General Biology
Hometown: San Diego, CA
Hello! I’m excited to serve with all of you staff, fellow TA’s, and brothers and sisters in Christ this summer :D I’m currently a 4th year student at UCSD about to finish my bachelor’s degree in general biology. I hope is to take a gap year and begin optometry school in Fall of 2019.
What superpower do you want and why? If I could have a super power it would definitely be teleportation because gas prices are getting ridiculously high again LOL cries.
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? A hobby I would’ve liked to pick up would definitely be piano. I actually played piano for a few months when I was a kid but I didn’t have the patience or the passion for music at the time. I do play the violin currently but piano would be much easier to apply for example in worship team.
Naomi Michiko, TA
National University of Singapore ’19 | Life Sciences with Specialization in Biomedical Science
Hey there! I am Naomi, and I will soon begin on my final year at the National University of Singapore (NUS) this fall! God has shown me His ways by giving me the opportunity to go on exchange at Boston College (BC) this past Spring, and subsequently opening up doors for me to strengthen my relationship with Him through an MSCE publicity email. [Not for a MSCE publicity email being sent into my BC inbox, I would never have found out about MSCE!] I will be embarking on a final year project in the field of neuroscience, and if God-willing, I aspire to be a neuroscientist! Currently, I am part of the NUS Kendo Club, and I enjoy travelling with my family and catching up with my friends during the holidays. I also take favor in strolls around scenic places as they have the ability to relieve my stress. I look forward to meeting all of you and forging new friendships! ☺
What superpower do you want and why? I would love to acquire the superpower of teleportation so I can save time (more time to sleep) and money on transportation (and spend them on food! ☺)
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? I have always wanted to learn how to play the piano but I never had the chance to as my parents thought I was spending too much money on ballet and fencing. When I was younger, I remember labeling the keys on my keyboard with alphabets and numbers as I had the urge to compose songs but I have zero knowledge of musical notes. It has been my dream to play Jay Chou’s pieces!
Alex Myau, TA
Biola University ’20 | Nursing
Hometown: Palo Alto, CA
Hi everyone! My name is Alex and I’m currently a student at Biola University studying nursing. I hope one day to serve in the medical field somewhere because I really enjoy serving others and taking care of them. My parents are OG Taiwanese from Taipei and Kaohsiung so I’ve always been a big fan of Taiwanese culture. If you like food and boba then we should get along just fine☺. I can usually be found on either end of the active spectrum as I like being outside and playing sports but at the same time I like to also just lie in bed and sleep. Excited to be serving this year with you all!
What superpower do you want and why? If I could have any superpower, I would have the ability to create temporary clones (Shadow clone jutsu anyone?) but retain the same conscience in each body so that I can do a large amount of tasks at once while retaining any learning experience each clone does.
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? I’ve always wanted to learn how to break dance but never found the proper body coordination to really pick it up when I was young.
Shannon Tseng, TA
University of California, Los Angeles ’21 | Biology
Hometown: Fremont, CA
Hi everyone! My name is Shannon, and I’m currently studying biology at UCLA. I grew up in a Taiwanese American family in the Bay Area and attended Home of Christ 3. I’m currently pursuing a career in the fields of medicine and public health. My prayer is that God would use me for His glory in whatever way He wills. In my free time, I enjoy swimming, eating good food, and hanging out with my family and friends.
What superpower do you want and why? If I were to have one superpower, it would be the ability to instantly find lost things. I tend to misplace my belongings, so having this superpower would save me a lot of time. Also, it would mean that I’d have the ability to find God’s lost sheep! But of course, He’s the only one with the ability to grant them salvation.
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? I really wanted to learn the guitar, but I never did because it was too large and a bit pricey. Instead, I found a compromise by learning the ukulele.
Brandon Ung, TA
Biola University ’19 | Commercial Music
Hometown: Fremont, CA
Hello, Brandon here! This is my second year going to MSCE. Last year was filled with so many great memories and I’m so excited to be back! I just finished my first transfer year at Biola University down in Southern California. I’m studying music in the Commercial Music B.A. program there and am possibly looking to study music therapy afterwards. I actually first learned about music therapy after researching it specifically for my MSCE presentation last year. There are so many great artists out there, but recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Tedeschi Trucks Band, Oscar Peterson, Clean Bandit, Us The Duo and Lawrence. Music is such a wonderful gift that God has given us! I can’t wait to meet y’all and make new friends!
What superpower do you want and why? If I could have any super power, it would be the ability to create transportation portals to anywhere. That way I could travel anywhere to go visit people and also if I sold anything online, I could send it immediately to the other person who would be very surprised but happy to have received what they ordered so quickly.
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? I’ve always thought that woodworking/woodcarving would be a nice hobby to take up. I’ve never gotten around to doing it, but it’s so cool to see some of the things that people can make out of what once used to be part of a tree. Also, fresh wood smells really nice =)
Joyce En-Hua Wang, TA
Duke University ’19 | Neuroscience
Hometown: Taipei, Taiwan
Hello! My name is En-Hua Wang but feel free to call me Joyce! I grew up in Taipei, Taiwan and am a junior at Duke University. During my free time, I enjoy the outdoors, music, hanging out, and food (I miss the delicacies from Taiwan especially). I study neuroscience and minor in global health and computational biology while being on the pre-medicine track. I wish to pursue a future career at the intersection of medicine, public health, and faith, just as it is written in 1 Corinthians 10:31: “…whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Last year, I heard about MSCE from my high school friend who is currently a third-year medical student at Mackay Medical College, and now I am really excited to serve as a TA this year! Looking forward to a week of fellowship, bonding, and fun with you all!
What superpower do you want and why? The power to heal, which will probably come in handy when I become a physician.
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? I have always wanted to learn photography, but for someone who only knows how to draw stick figures, I don’t really have the aesthetic/artistic talent unfortunately.
Kevin Zhou, TA
Williams College ’20 | Chemistry and Biology
Hometown: Seattle, WA
Hello! I’m Kevin and I’m a second-year student at Williams College. In my spare time at Williams I sing in an acapella group, work in a biochem lab, tutor at a prison, and help with worship teams on campus and the local church. I’m extremely spontaneous and often go on crazy adventures with friends and strangers. I love writing letters, woodworking, playing music with friends, and pressing leaves. I’m obsessed with animals and spend a lot of time observing the unusually large squirrels on campus. Although I have a passion for medicine and research, my childhood dream was to drive a garbage truck and backpack across south America. I’m excited to get to know the students at MSCE and share how God has moved in my life these past few years.
What superpower do you want and why? Teleportation would be incredible. I miss a lot of my friends at home and being able to physically be there for them at a moment’s notice would be such a blessing. The food scene in Williamstown is also pretty disappointing, so it would be nice to be able to teleport somewhere else for meals.
What hobby have you always wanted to pick up but never did? I’ve always wanted to get serious about cooking.
